Surrogate gives birth to quadruplets for grateful couple

Deborah Wibber carried for Stacey and David Beehler in Glendale after 13 years of infertility. Four babies born by Caesarean section weighed 4 pounds to 4 pounds 3 ounces. David Austin led at 7 am, followed by Michele Lynn, Kylee Hleen, and Shiann Nicole, each a minute apart. Wibber, 30, in good condition, has two children of her own.

Wrecking crew wrecks wrong house near preservation trust

A demolition crew, aiming at a 102 year old home of pioneer Dr. James Jackson, accidentally breached the adjacent Dade Heritage Trust headquarters. Bulldozer operator Jesus Ramos called it an accident as the crew continued tearing down the wrong house despite damage to porch, window and roof tiles. Becky Roper Markov criticized the lapse as sheer stupidity.

Texas A&M president Bowen to step down in 2002

Texas A&M University President Ray Bowen said he will step down next year after guiding the school through record enrollments and the 1999 bonfire collapse. Bowen, 65, will remain as a professor and lead the university until June 30, 2002, after which he plans to teach mechanical engineering. Fall 2000 enrollment stood at 44,026, making Texas A&M the fourth-largest U.S. public university, and he oversaw the 1997 opening of the $80 million George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

Bush signals renewed talks with North Korea on policy review

Washington reports that after completing a major policy review, President Bush orders his foreign policy team to resume security talks with North Korea. Officials say discussions will cover missiles, forces on the peninsula, humanitarian aid, and regional ties, with sanctions potentially eased if Pyongyang cooperates. The administration plans a robust endorsement of South Korea's sun shine policy to reopen dialogue and reconcile the Koreas even as war remains technically unresolved.

EPA toughens Nevada Yucca Mountain radiation rule

The EPA sets a 15 millirems per year limit for residents 11 miles from Yucca Mountain with groundwater exposure capped at 4 millirems. The Nuclear Energy Institute fights the standard in two courts while Energy Secretary Abraham says the rules are tough but achievable.
