Lawrence airport expansion to begin this summer
Lawrence Municipal Airport will expand starting in July with a larger apron adding 15,000 square yards, a new taxiway, and a strengthened runway to support heavier jet traffic. The project costs 1.8 to 2 million dollars, 90 percent federally funded, with completion aimed before the Kansas Speedway NASCAR event in September. A second phase in summer 2002 will extend the runway by 700 feet at another 1.8 million, with wetlands mitigation under study.

Lawrence man defends innocence in Wendy's robbery case
Duwone Flowers, 30, faced a six man six woman jury over an alleged Dec 10 2000 Wendy's robbery in Lawrence. He testified he was with friends at nightclubs and playing Nintendo, but his witnesses were unavailable, and investigators found chili stains and fibers deemed inconclusive. The defense argued Flowers was framed by a Wendy's employee and a manager, while prosecutors said he hid inside the restaurant and demanded office keys. no weapon was found. Deliberations continued.

Officials investigate gun-toting motorists in Lawrence incidents
Lawrence Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s officers are probing two road rage style incidents in which motorists pointed weapons at others. In one case a Jeep Cherokee allegedly blocked a car and the driver pointed a handgun. in another, a pellet gun was used to threaten bicyclists. No arrests have been made and the case has been sent to the Douglas County District Attorney.
