Secretary Weeks announced a substantial drop in unemployment and a May job surge, claiming 1955 could be the nation’s strongest year if industrial peace holds. May employment hit a record 62.703 million, unemployment fell to 2.489 million, and output neared a peak as production climbs.
Harold G Barr dean of Kansas University School of Religion oversees graduates who, after the activities under the stadium, receive diplomas. Campus police chief Joe Skillman reports a very cooperative crowd with no trouble. An 83 year old Kansas City woman Mary Brinkmeyer had a heart attack during the ceremonies and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in fair condition.
The House Merchant Marine Committee approved immediate construction of two atomic powered Merchant Marine ships despite administration objections. It backed President Eisenhower's nuclear peace ship concept and authorized a second nuclear powered vessel to promote the merchant marine. The vote was unanimous to combine the two projects in one bill.
Members of the Kansas State Peace Officers Assn endorse plans for a national peace officers hall of fame in Dodge City at the Cowboy Capital of the World Museum. The approval came as a resolution from a committee of peace officers appointed by directors of the sponsoring Cowboy Capital of the World, Inc.
In Knoxville Tennessee two young brothers Ronald Satterfield seven and Kenneth Satterfield fell on or into obstacles causing fractures. Ronald broke his right arm running into a tree while Kenneth fractured his left arm after a bicycle fall. They entered a hospital together and left with casts on their forearms.
Army workers meet at the Hotel Eldridge to plan a near term windup of a $35,000 building fund drive for a new Salvation Army headquarters at 10th and N Streets. Co chairmen Kraft and Kappelman report about $15,000 raised and note delays from some firms. Residential area calls west of Massachusetts continue with door to door outreach and callbacks. Multiple organizations and individuals contribute including Ober’s Rapid Transit Co and Lucille Rednour with amounts ranging from $25 to $100.
Seventy Baker University graduates at Baldwin heard Dr Charles Ray Goff say their generation can change human nature and usher a new day in history if they unite like early Christians. The 97th commencement in Memorial Hall honored Dr Dana Dawson and Rev Benjamin Schmidtke with honorary degrees as Baker President Dr Nelson P. Horn presided.
In the Kansas City area Ford plants and a parts depot faced a second day of strikes after a national agreement with CIO United Auto Workers. Over 3,000 workers remained on picket lines with unions citing local issues over seniority based promotions and merit increases.
Lee Haworth city manager at Pittsburg Kansas for two years arrived in Lawrence this week to start as district manager for Ready Made Buildings Inc of Pittsburg Holmes Peck and Brown local franchise jobbers for the firm have bought eight lots in Southwest Lawrence and will begin building Ready Made homes on two of them Wednesday Haworth his wife and daughter will live in one of the homes at 832 West 21st Street The Pittsburg firm sells packaged homes and farm buildings of modular frame construction Local jobbers either sell the packaged units or erect the homes and sell them completed The homes planned by Holmes Peck and Brown will be built by local subcontractors and sold completed.

Lawrence police say three youths were apprehended Monday afternoon at the Community Building near 11th and Vt streets while removing planks from bleacher seats. They were released after a warning from police.
Surgeon General Leonard Scheele told the American Medical Association that vaccine makers reported only good batches and discarded bad ones. He cited inadequate safety tests that allowed live virus to go undetected and noted live virus found in Cutter vaccine. Scheele said safety rules are tightening and more vaccine will arrive to curb paralytic polio.

Six Kansas University seniors were graduated with honors Monday night in the 83rd annual Commencement exercises in Memorial Stadium. The honors designation on their diplomas signifies superior scholarship and their enrollment in honors courses in their major fields of study. Emily Enos and Mary Zee received bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees with honors in English. Terry Fiske and Nancy Jamison earned bachelor of arts degrees with honors in political science. James Gillett and Lloyd Pine earned bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees with honors in chemistry.
Larry Heeb newly elected chair man of the Douglas County Red Cross chapter urged board members to attend every meeting as the chapter faces key items. Heeb, presiding at his first board meeting since his election, noted plans for civil defense training in first aid and home nursing, disaster preparedness, and the United Fund drive. Mrs. J. W. Murray reported the budget drive is within 20.48 of the goal and $139.83 has been raised for tornado victims in Udall and Oklahoma.
Lawrence residents plan to attend a Prince Hall Grand Lodge meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday night. Thurgood Marshall of Washington D C will address the gathering as head of legal counsel for the NAACP. The 8 p m event in Memorial Hall is open to the public and a letter inviting Lawrence members was sent by P G Porter of Olathe.
