Early harvest momentum for Douglas County wheat farmers
Mild winter and warm spring push harvest three weeks ahead. Carl Flory, a Lawrence area farmer, notes this season’s wheat crop is unique with an unusually early harvest. Farmers test moisture, cut with a combine, and store grain before fall planting as Douglas County Extension director Bill Wood anticipates an extra step for growers.

Kansas bans e-cigarette sales to those under 18 effective July
Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said the new Kansas law prohibits purchase or possession of electronic cigarettes by anyone under 18 and allows school districts to set their own on campus policies. Gov. Brownback signed the measure after passage in May, with lawmakers including Rep. Pat Colloton, Rep. Melanie Meier, and Rep. Tom Sloan. The law defines electronic cigarettes as battery powered devices delivering nicotine vapor, regardless of shape, and aligns with FDA concerns about vaping. Vendors licensed to sell cigarettes may continue without changes, as the statute targets underage sales and possession.

Lawmakers urged to fund schools to halt decline
Alan Rupe, counsel for 54 districts, told a three judge panel in the school finance trial that Kansas must fulfill its constitutional duty to raise funding to prevent another generation from being harmed. He argued the state cut 511 million from schools in recent years, undoing prior funding gains, while the state's attorney defended financing amid a tough economy.
