Prominent Iola Attorney John Toland Dies at 61
John R. Toland 61 of Iola died Friday June 2 2006 at Kansas University Medical Center. Services will be at 7 p m today at First Presbyterian Church Iola with burial in Highland Cemetery. Toland was a KU graduate Navy JAG veteran and former president of the Allen County Bar Association. He practiced at Toland and Thompson and held multiple honors including Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster. He is survived by his wife Karen three sons a daughter and a brother. Memorials may go to First Presbyterian Church or an educational memorial fund for his children.

Boy hit by car on roller skates in Lawrence crosswalk
An 8 year old Lawrence boy was struck by a red Honda Civic while crossing Massachusetts Street on roller skates near a stoplight crosswalk at South Park around 10 p.m. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries and was awake and alert before the ambulance arrived. Police say the driver was using a cell phone at the moment of impact.
