Married Deacons Signal New Era for Catholic Clergy
A new corps of married deacons will serve extensively in the Catholic Church in the United States after two years of training. About 50 deacons will be ordained by fall, with 30 in June, and about 400 more preparing. They can baptize preach distribute communion and perform weddings and funerals but cannot consecrate bread and wine or hear confessions. The move marks a historic shift from a millennium old practice as discussions continue on women's ordination and priests marrying.
