Kansas Boys State hosts 1 051 high school seniors in a year long leadership program run by the American Legion. Delegates campaign for offices in simulated city county and state governments and attend seminars and talks.
The Midwestern Music and Art Camp at Kansas University opens June 9 for junior high and June 22 for senior divisions. Total participants will exceed last year’s half, with junior high enrollment up slightly, music about 275 280, art 115, and senior high around 900 vs 1 620 prior. Language sections are dropped due to lack of interest as prices rise amid economic conditions. Guest conductors include Dr Milburn Carey and Victor Alessandro among a long list of KU and allied educators and musicians.
Samuel J. Cooley 78 of Park Ridge Illinois retired vice president for real estate and industrial development for the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific Railroad died following an automobile accident. A native of Lawrence Kansas he held an engineering degree from the University of Kansas and earlier worked with other railroads and the Interstate Commerce Commission before entering real estate in Kansas City Survivors include his widow and a daughter Mrs Timothy Corcoran of Peoria Services to be held at Ryan Parke Funeral Home in Park Ridge Saturday.
In New York the American Korean Foundation presented Mamie Eisenhower with a turtle shaped paper weight of topaz and gold. The gift marks the founding of an agricultural program named for Dwight D. Eisenhower to train 600000 South Koreans.
Kansas 4 H Clubs held Friends of 4 H Day at Rock Springs Ranch near Junction City to honor 44 individuals and businesses for long time support. Ray Frisbie led the recognition program. Dolph Simons Sr. presided at a noon luncheon and tours followed. The Rock Springs Ranch Wall of Fame added L R Quinlan and the late Fred D Wilson. Attendees viewed the citizenship seminar and safety camp.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alexandrine Heberling 96 of Rt 2 Overbrook will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Albright Funeral Home with Rev Joye A Doane officiating. Burial follows at Twin Mound Cemetery. She died Thursday in an Ottawa nursing home and was a lifelong Overbrook resident member of Twin Mound United Methodist Church. Survived by son Carl and two grandchildren. Rosary 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Warren Mortuary with memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church.
James Hoffa announces retirement after 14 years as Teamsters president and endorses Frank E. Fitzsimmons to succeed him. Hoffa cites legal difficulties in prison and may seek parole. discussions involve the Justice Department and high level officials.

John H. Sommer 96 of Eudora died Thursday night at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hogan officiating.
Mrs. Emma Wiedemann aged 78 of 1947 Vermont Street died early today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending at Rumsey Funeral Home. She is survived by two daughters Mrs Mildred Nelson Stillwater Oklahoma and Mrs Ruth Stephens St Petersburg Florida, a son Robert Denver Colorado, twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
South Vietnamese field commanders report heavy losses at Snoul in Cambodia and announce a switch to mobile cross border operations. They note loss of U.S. ground forces and continued air support, with Task Force 8 depleted and back from Snoul. Snuol losses cited as 300 killed or missing with 74 suspected still missing. Damaged units diverted to border protection 60 miles south and 80 miles north of Saigon. Khmer Rouge surrender at Krek base noted along with weapon seizures.
EPA in Kansas City will seek prosecution of Hercules Power Company operator at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in Johnson County Kansas for willfully discharging toxic ammonia into Kill Creek in April. More than 3000 fish died along a two mile stretch. Possible fine up to 2500 dollars per day of spill from April 19 to 28.

Fire crews report an estimated five dollar damage from a car fire at Ninth and New Hampshire in Lawrence at 5 13 p m Thursday. Driver was Charles Nichols of 740 Walnut.
The Lawrence Douglas County Commission named Johanna Kollmorgen to the 10 member Planning Commission replacing W E Rice who declined reappointment. Ralph Pine Jr was reap pointed to his first full term. Both begin three year terms June 1.
Four hundred forty four delegates from Kansas high schools will attend the 29th annual Sunflower Girls State at the University of Kansas June 6 13. The government in action week is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary with Mrs Lyle Seymour of Bird City as director and 41 counselors. Gov Robert B Docking is set to address the inauguration and Lt Gov Reynolds Schultz and Secretary of State Mrs Elwin Shanahan are slated as speakers.
The Manitowoc Marine Band, long an all male group, opens its doors to women and plans to expand from 60 to 75 members while recruiting female musicians.
