Eleanor Marie Youngberg of Lawrence graduates from Kansas University with highest distinction though the registrar notes an error in the official list. Across town Drake's Bakery at 907 Mass is getting a glass brick front and new entrance.
Larry Jones a 21 year old Kansas University senior in engineering and Phi Kappa Sigma member was critically injured Tuesday in a three car collision that killed his father Arthur C. Jones a Milford Kansas teacher. The accident happened on U S 75 four miles south of Ennis Texas. Two others were less seriously injured.
Roscoe Paul Thompson of Route 3 died Monday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Hett officiating. Burial will be in the veterans plot at Oak Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his father J F Thompson of the Douglas County Convalescent Home.
Managua reports three schooners carrying rebels and arms en route from Cuba to support about 75 or more fighters who landed by plane from Costa Rica. Exile sources name Pedro Joaquin Chamorro among invasion leaders as Costa Rica backs Nicaragua’s rebel movement. The Planning Commission approved a permit to build a 24 lane bowling alley at Hillcrest Shopping Center. The City Commission will rule next Tuesday. Rev. Arthur R. MacDougall 62 of Bingham, longtime pastor and author, was convicted by a Superior Court jury of statutory rape of a 14 year old girl who said he fathered her baby. Judge Leonard Williams will determine sentencing later this month. He was released on $15,000 bail.
Harvesting of what may be Kansas fifth largest wheat crop is expected to begin in southern border counties this weekend. R B Gilkison heads the state harvest labor control office in Great Bend and issued the first bulletin. The crop may reach 233 002 000 bushels based on May 1 conditions with cutting starting in Cowley Sumner and Harper counties and spreading northwest over the custom combine area as ripening proceeds.
Mrs. Harry S. Truman was discharged from Research Hospital in Kansas City after surgery on May 18 to remove a tumor from her left breast.
