Cremation reshapes church rites amid rising demand
In Detroit area churches, cremation fuels new rituals and facilities. Historic Trinity Lutheran Church stores ashes on site and in alcove niches. Fort Street Presbyterian builds columbaria while Grosse Pointe United Methodist adds outdoor memorial gardens. The shift stems from costs, mobility, and fragmented families driving higher cremation rates nationwide, projected to rise to 45 percent by 2010.
