Four-Legged Letter Carriers Keep Old Mail Route Alive

In the Grand Canyon region, postal contractor Charlie Chamberlain and wranglers deliver mail to Supai by mule train and trail, a century-old method still used five days a week. Boxes, food, and even fragile items travel from Peach Springs to the Havasupai village, with mules climbing eight miles to reach Supai. The program, part of a broader USPS effort to serve remote addresses, preserves house-to-house delivery by unconventional means, including occasional mule losses or cremations on the trail.
