Gov Robert Docking announced plans for a telephone conference of the State Finance Council to seek approval for use of 24,967 dollars allotted for Attorney General Vern Miller’s drug abuse campaign. The council must approve before spending under a legislative ceiling, as Miller highlighted education and rehabilitation efforts at a Kansas Union banquet with Dr. Stuart Loomis of Haight Ashbury.

Rangers Beat Back Major North Vietnamese Attack Near Pleiku
About 400 North Vietnamese forces attacked South Vietnamese rangers 30 miles south of Pleiku in the Central Highlands before dawn. The counterattack left 50 enemy dead in a 25 minute fight. Three South Vietnamese soldiers died and 20 were wounded. 10 Rangers were wounded in an earlier sweep. U.S. casualties included five wounded and the death of Colonel Edward J. Cavanaugh at Da Nang. Two American helicopters were shot down, bringing U.S. aircraft losses to 7,875.

Top Girl and Youth Named at KU Music Camp
Miss Ann Somerville of Albuquerque New Mexico and Randy Leverick of Houston Texas were named the most outstanding girl and boy musicians at the 34th Midwestern Music and Art Camp at the University of Kansas, where 452 high school musicians from 39 states trained in bands choirs orchestras and theory through five weeks ending July 25. Somerville played bassoon in the Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra Leverick played French horn in the same groups. Other outstanding campers included Gwen Rummer a cello in the Symphony Orchestra.

Dole Says Econ Relief Bill Has Public Works Approval

Bob Dole said the Senate Public Works Committee approved an economic disaster relief bill patterned on the Disaster Relief Act of 1970 The plan would broaden definitions of major disaster to include high unemployment and authorize a federal coordinating officer to assess needs and coordinate aid. Poultry Polluted by Fish Meal Warned in 10 States
FDA says 16 000 tons of fish meal contaminated with PCB were largely eaten by poultry while the Agriculture Department reports no harmful PCB residues in chickens in grocery meat cases. East Coast Terminal Inc in Wilmington NC leaked the chemical for up to ten weeks before discovery July 16. Union Rejects Steel Proposal For 330 000 Workers

Officials from Santa Fe in Topeka report 19 Lawrence residents idled by the strike though not all are UTU members. Kansas commission trims Peoples Natural Gas rate raise
Kansas Corporation Commission chairman Dale E. Saffels said the panel cut the rate increase request by Peoples Natural Gas Co by about 30 percent. The company serves 24 000 customers across 38 western counties including Garden City Dodge City Lyons Goodland Satanta and Sublette. The commission said 8.73 percent return was excessive and set 7.75 percent as reasonable, adding about 827 000 in extra revenue. New rates should apply 30 days after approval of revised structures.
