Apollo 15 crews prepare for lunar orbit using a hybrid engine ignition procedure to bypass a short circuit. Commander David Scott reports a smooth burn as the spacecraft nears the moon, 14,294 miles away traveling 2,691 mph.
Secretary of Transportation John A. Volpe urged Congress to enact a bill establishing permanent procedures to settle transit labor disputes. He said the emergency public interest protection act is not pro management nor pro labor, but aims to protect people from becoming victims of labor unrest.
The Nixon administration schedules fresh negotiations between the United Transportation Union and railroad carriers to resolve a work stoppage idling four railroads. Officials urge a voluntary agreement while lawmakers consider permanent transit labor legislation.
The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission recommended to the City Commission zoning and site plan approval for two shopping centers forming a combined complex at 15th and Kasold. The plan includes a convenience center with offices and services and a 62 175 square foot supermarket driven complex across the street, with heavy landscaping and inward facing service areas. A 10 year old boy who wandered from a church camp near the Santa Ysabel Reservation, 40 miles northwest of San Diego, was found safe after a 24 hour search. He is scratched but ok and had a speech defect that can cause hyperactivity without medication. San Diego sheriff officers, bloodhounds and a rescue team scoured the area, then resumed the effort at dawn. The boy’s mother described him as bright and alert but afraid of the dark.
The Lawrence area remains soaked as five days of rain total 4.07 inches at the KU weather station. Perry Lake levels are near normal while the Kansas River sits well below flood stage. The forecast expects rain ending tonight with partial clearing and cool, breezy days ahead.
With a two day steel strike deadline, the United Steelworkers Union reports a 93 percent vote authorizing a walkout. Talks with nine major firms covering 350000 workers stalled over unlimited cost-of-living pay and resumed, with a policy committee to meet Friday to consider a new offer or strike.
Douglas County unemployment rose to 6.7 percent in June 1971, a 72 percent increase from June 1970. Statewide joblessness jumped 26 percent since May 1971, with 64,900 unemployed in the state and May at 5.8 percent. Government jobs fell, with 1,025 cuts, amid defense layoffs and seasonal factors.
