Boy Missing From Camp Returns Safe in California

A 10 year old boy who wandered from a church camp near the Santa Ysabel Reservation, 40 miles northwest of San Diego, was found safe after a 24 hour search. He is scratched but ok and had a speech defect that can cause hyperactivity without medication. San Diego sheriff officers, bloodhounds and a rescue team scoured the area, then resumed the effort at dawn. The boy’s mother described him as bright and alert but afraid of the dark.

Rain drenches Lawrence as rainfall nears four inches

The Lawrence area remains soaked as five days of rain total 4.07 inches at the KU weather station. Perry Lake levels are near normal while the Kansas River sits well below flood stage. The forecast expects rain ending tonight with partial clearing and cool, breezy days ahead.

Steelworkers OK Strike as Deadline Near

With a two day steel strike deadline, the United Steelworkers Union reports a 93 percent vote authorizing a walkout. Talks with nine major firms covering 350000 workers stalled over unlimited cost-of-living pay and resumed, with a policy committee to meet Friday to consider a new offer or strike.

Douglas County June unemployment 6.7 percent

Douglas County unemployment rose to 6.7 percent in June 1971, a 72 percent increase from June 1970. Statewide joblessness jumped 26 percent since May 1971, with 64,900 unemployed in the state and May at 5.8 percent. Government jobs fell, with 1,025 cuts, amid defense layoffs and seasonal factors.
