Downtown plan approved with angle parking clash in Lawrence
Lawrence city commissioners approved the Downtown 2000 site plan despite staff fears that angle parking on New Hampshire would set a bad precedent. The 16 angle spaces aim to boost shopper perception, though staff opposed the layout and one commissioner abstained due to conflict of interest. The vote was 3-1 with opposition to angle parking from Commissioner Mike Rundle. The plan also includes a mid block pedestrian crossing and a nearby Centennial Park missile decision. The Polaris missile will remain, to be painted and signposted, as part of park renovations.

Lawrence seeks loan for plant improvements plan
Lawrence agreed Tuesday to apply for a $5.62 million loan from the state to fund upgrades at the water treatment plant. New federal rules require pumping lime slurry to lagoons instead of discharging into the Kansas River. Funds would come from the Kansas Public Water Supply Fund and be repaid via water utility fees.

FTA clears city to hire MV Transportation for bus system
The Federal Transit Administration approved Lawrence's selection of MV Transportation to operate the planned bus system, ending a bid dispute with Lawrence Bus Co. The city will negotiate a new contract costing about 1.77 million dollars annually for three years, with delivery of 10 to 12 buses from El Dorado National delayed at least a year. Wayne Popp of Lawrence Bus opposes the decision and may appeal to the FTA.
