Congress Drops Postal Hike in Final Session Push

Congress killed the postal rate bill as it hurried to adjourn while approving other Eisenhower priorities. The House cleared the foreign aid bill of 3.766 billion dollars for Senate action and passed a Social Security reform raising early retirement ages. The Senate approved military construction funding but blocked housing, and an admissions tax cut on movie tickets moved forward. The vetoed defense-authorization language was dropped in a reapproved measure. The failed postal measure would have raised letter postage from 3 to 4 cents.
