In the mid-1950s Lawrence planners eyed Centennial Park as a green refuge beyond the wilderness west of Sunset Hill. Read Defends Dumping Ground Location in Lawrence Letter
On July 25 1897 Lawrence World reprints a letter by E W Read a city councilman and chair of the city property committee. Read disputes the paper's claim of a depot front dump noting the actual chute to dump garbage into the river lies about 800 feet east and 600 feet north of the passenger depot near the sewer outlet and old railroad bridge calling such guessing harmful to Lawrence and other cities.
