New Door Mat System Uses Lattice Porch Floor

Mrs. Jane W Barnes of Kansas State College proposes a practical method to keep door mats clean. Build a stone lattice on the porch floor level with it so a fiber or rubber mat fits snugly and sits even with the porch skirt, allowing dirt to drop through to the ground below. This design cuts down labor cleaning mats and porches.

Democrats Unveil Civil Rights Plank At Chicago Convention

READY TO SHOW CHICAGO in Democrats. In a surprising display of harmony, Phaned to unveil their new plat form Wednesday. It contains a compromise "civil rights' plank. While there always is a chance for a good fight at any national Democratic convention, a coalition of moderate Dixie-Yankee leaders appeared to be in control at this session. Rep. John W. McCormack of Massachusetts, platform chairman, asked his 108-member full com mittee to meet Wednesday after noon to go over the draft word by word. The convention will not be ready to consider the platform until Wednesday night. The new civil rights plank was said to promise Negro and other minority groups equal opportu nities to vote and work, security of person and an end to discrimina tions based on race, color, religion or origin. It avoids specific proposals that have poved offensive to Southern ers who believe that racial prob lems are best handled at state and local levels. Also softened were demands of Sen. Herbert Lehman of New York and other Northerners for a tough "anti-filibuster plank' calling for revision of Senate rules.
