Explosion injures worker at Atchison plant

Fred M Harris 73 Ottawa lawyer and Kansas board of regents chairman died of a heart attack after working in his office. Born near Homewood in 1876 he lived in Ottawa since age one. He served as state senator 1929 to 1931 and rejected a Kansas Supreme Court appointment. May Close Highways As Wakarusa River Rises
The Wakarusa River near Lawrence was rising rapidly at noon and could force closures of Lone Star Clinton Road near Dutton Bridge before late afternoon. Water was about a foot deep along much of the road with readings around 28 feet, up a foot in the hour. Other roads closed or at risk included the county road north of Eudora and parts of highways 10 24 near Williamstown and Newman. County Engineer Joe Rice said bridges were being checked and no bridges were out as yet. Deputy P W Jones warned Baldwin Road may shut if the river reaches 29 feet and urged travelers to call for updates.
