Who Pays for Day Care in Lawrence Kansas
About 27 million dollars in federal money sits available to Kansas communities for social services via the State Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. Local matching funds are needed. Lawrence Mayor Nanike Hambleton urges a special tax levy to back all federal programs, while Douglas County weighs its options under a tax lid. The city and county have yet to commit, as revenue sharing cannot be used for this matching funds need. An ad hoc committee led by Suderman and Hambleton pushes a centralized day care association to pool funds and qualify for IVA scholarships, despite philosophical splits and competition among centers.
