Haiti closes killer syrup laboratory
Haiti banned two fever syrups from Pharval Laboratories Afebril and Valodon after tests found diethylene glycol contamination. At least 60 deaths in Haiti and 76 children under five likely linked to the medicines since late 1995, with the solvent imported from Germany. Investigators cite unsafe manufacturing practices as the cause and the German embassy notes the firm is not a drug manufacturer.
