Government Moves Under Connally-Smith Act on Strike

Pittsburgh July 14 The government convened a federal grand jury to probe the lin verick coal strike that began in June as idle miners in southwestern Pennsylvania fell from 10 000 to about 3000. United States Steel reported improvement in Fayette county coal fields and planned to haul 24000 tons today, while most miners had returned to work after June 25 despite union opposition and a looming private ownership return.

First Rock Arrives to Scatter At Airport

The city received the first 100 tons of crushed rock yesterday for scattering along a 700 foot line strip at the airport front, where planes are refueled and worked on. A second 100 tons is expected today to replace the old cinders that caused mud trouble. The city council approved the purchase last Friday and the Santa Fe railroad transports rock from Garnett quarry to Lawrence.

River Change Threatens Eudora Kaw Bridge

County commissioners will inspect the Kay river west of Eudora on Friday to assess a proposed new channel. If the Kaw cuts a new path, the Eudora bridge may become useless as the river would join the Wakarusa farther south.

Martinique joins United Nations on Bastille anniversary

Men At Olathe Base Help In Harvest

At the naval air station in Olathe three cadets and 30 enlisted men are temporarily farming to aid the harvest. Captain Dixie Kiefer explains no mass assignment. each case is handled individually. About 20 more personnel and cadets may join soon, joining 33 already farming. The cadets are Ross W. Hanson, W. L. Lyman, and Albert Richmeier.

Edmonds Grocery Robbed in Lawrence Nightbreak

Police report a break in at the Edmonds grocery at 1903 Massachusetts Street. Thieves forced entry through a window and a door hole, stealing 50 cartons of cigarets about $12 cash from two registers and ration checks. Similar raids occurred July 7 at Johnny's Grill and North Side Lunch, with tools and gas ration books taken at McConnell lumber yard. Allied Air Forces Pound Sicily In Big Offensive

Allied bombers and fighters hit Sicily and surrounding waters sinking two merchant ships and damaging two destroyers. Booze Cargo Seized After Jail Visit Intercept
