Fire starter explains necessity of deadly blaze in Arizona
Valinda Elliott, 31, told AP she started a signal fire in the wilderness to attract a TV helicopter after two lost nights. The blaze grew into Arizona’s largest wildfire, merging with the Rodeo fire and destroying hundreds of homes while forcing about 30,000 people to evacuate. Authorities say Rodeo was started by Leonard Gregg, a Fort Apache firefighter applicant, who pleaded innocent to federal charges. Elliott has not been charged.
