Austere bachelor leaves a fortune in Kansas City will
Ralph George Baldwin a reclusive 80 year old who lived frugally in a rented room died July 4 and left a million dollar estate to cousins distant relatives and friends. The will filed in probate lists 75000 cash with the rest in stocks. The largest bequest of 250000 goes to cousin Willard W Wiley of Mission Kansas who helped care for Baldwin. Baldwin grew up on a farm near Ottawa Kansas and after inheriting it around 1910 he invested in stocks and in the 1920s ran a bicycle shop in Kansas City. He never sold stock and the 1929 crash gave him buying opportunities. He cooked his own meals and wore one patched suit for years.
