Watching Posts Are Undermanned in Radar Watch
Washington reports civilian volunteers manned posts in the Northern U. S. round-the-clock radar watch but large gaps appeared. More than 190,000 volunteers offered to help, yet the Air Force needs about 330,000 more. Coverage was half or less in Ohio, Michigan, Detroit, Rhode Island, and other areas, with some centers at 24-hour operation in Pittsburgh. President Truman backed the drive, stressing that every citizen’s aid helps deter war. The effort notes radar limits and the need for human lookouts to compensate for detection blind spots. Army anti-aircraft units were moved near strategic targets to raise readiness. The watcher network spans the Canadian border and northern coastal states.
