A growing Kansas river flood washed away two bridges in Topeka and threatened more damage as the death toll rose to 12 in Kansas and Missouri. The disaster destroyed four spans of the brickyard bridge on the western edge and the Serdou bridge linking North Topeka and Oakland.

Mail delivery in Lawrence was largely stopped as Hooding Water and Wakarusa River flooding blocked buses and rail lines. Rural carriers were mostly stalled, with only two small mail trickles reaching the area. First class mail shipped to Kansas City faced delays while Topeka and rural routes struggled under high water.
Engineers inspected the Kaw river bridge at 2 pm noting no flaws in the large concrete span completed in 1916. The north approach shows settling and a sidewalk section has dropped away but no undermining or major damage yet. County engineer Joe Rice led the inspection as floodwaters rush past the approach.
