Portrait of City Founder Encourages Study of History
At a city commission meeting Ex-Senator Robert C. Rankin presented a color portrait of Amos Lawrence, for whom the city is named, and ordered nine copies for the Lawrence-Douglas County Historical Society and city schools. Rankin, the son of early settlers, chose a youthful image to engage students and traced Lawrence’s role with the New England Emigrant Aid Society and the town’s naming amid early Kansas settlement history.
