Governor denies stay as Fleagle faces hanging in Canon City
Denver reports Governor William H. Adams refused a reprieve for Ralph Fleagle leader of a Lamar gang and said he would not interfere with the planned execution at the state penitentiary Canon City shortly after midnight. Harrison White Fleagle's counsel sought a conference with Supreme Court justices who upheld the verdict and denied a rehearing. White planned to pursue Fleagle's detailed confession and pursue a life sentence claim based on a prior court ruling that the state's promise to Fleagle was kept. The governor cited no grounds for clemency and instructed Warden Crawford that the petition had been denied. Fleagle's attorneys hoped to file a final petition by 3 PM if allowed by the high court.
