Protecting Kaw River Water Through Riparian Restoration Project
Friends of the Kaw partners with Native Lands LLC to restore native plants along a mile of the Kansas River north of the waterway near Eighth Street in North Lawrence. The effort aims to shield the drinking water source for about 800,000 people by removing invasive species such as winter creeper and Japanese honeysuckle and replanting cottonwood, bur oak, paw paw, buckeye, bottlebrush rye, and red columbine while educating the public about riparian buffers and water quality. Volunteers are sought for invasive removal, planting, and educational programs spanning a two year grant, with initial activities starting September 8.

Douglas County Eyes Budget Cut Impact on Road Safety Projects
Douglas County Public Works Director Keith Browning told commissioners on June 25 that proposed cuts to the capital fund would shrink road and bridge capital spending from 25.48 million to 18.63 million between 2019 and 2023. Road safety work on rural roads would drop from 17 miles annually to 0.8 miles, with emphasis shifted to the most critical projects. Two CR 458 safety upgrades near Clinton Dam and Wells Overlook would be scaled back, and paved shoulders on CR 1055 would be dropped, affecting a 2-mile Wakarusa Bridge area and East 1800 to East 2000 roads. The plan preserves culvert and bridge replacement schedules, including seven bridges every five years, while realignment and shoulder additions on CR 1055 would be reduced to only bridge work. The commission resumes budget talks at 8 a.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse.
