AP reports American paratroopers of the 101st Airborne were ambushed 50 miles south of Da Nang, nine killed and seven wounded after a day-long battle. The fight involved Viet Cong bunkers, air support, and seven hours of contact. U.S. casualties stood at one killed and six wounded.
Reported U S battle deaths in Vietnam fell to a lull level around 163 for the week ending July 4, suggesting casualties rise and fall with enemy attacks. President Nixon said U S casualties mirror enemy activity and that U S forces have not escalated operations.
A 450 600 damage antitrust suit was filed in U S District Court by John E Freeman Jr owner of Wyco Paper Co Kansas City Kan. The plaintiff names Wausau Paper Mills Co Brokaw Wis Fox River Paper Corp Appleton Wis and Butler Paper Co Kansas City as defendants. The complaint claims the firms restrained trade conspired to fix prices driving Wyco out of business and alleges discounts were offered to Wyco’s competitors.
London AP reports a 13 year ecumenical effort ends as Anglicans stall the Methodist reunion. Voters: Methodists 77.4 percent in favor, Anglicans 69 percent. Unity advocates still hope for an eventual wedding.
Lawrence students in the Kansas University music division will present four weekend concerts open to the public. Performances include Blue band Friday 7 15 p m east side Allen Fieldhouse and Concert choir with concert orchestra and gold band Saturday 2 15 p m University Theatre. Chamber choir and symphony orchestra Sunday 2 15 p m University Theatre. red band and concert band Sunday 7 p m University Theatre.
Two of three temporary inmate living quarters inside a fenced compound near the Kansas State Penitentiary were destroyed or damaged by fire Tuesday night, with a third building severely burned. A tunnel was found under a hut as guards uncovered a second escape attempt, and inmates were moved back inside the main prison as space became available. Robert N. Woodson, state penal director, arrived this morning to review the incidents.
Kansas Highway Patrol reported three area accidents Tuesday evening near Lawrence and Eudora. A two car collision at Highway 24 and Wellman Road left no injuries with damages around 400 dollars. A second crash on Highway 24 involved a truck rear ending a slowing auto, causing minor damage to the auto and none to the truck. A third single vehicle wreck east of Eudora saw a car strike a tree after leaving a bar, with front-end damage and no injuries.
The Wakarusa Watershed District discussed a proposed 1970 budget of 84,000,900 dollars at Tuesday’s meeting. It includes a carryover of 47,000,699.63 dollars and 167.60 dollars in back tax collection, with an additional 37,000,032.77 dollars to be raised by a 1.5 mill property tax levy. A public hearing will be held before a final decision.
The Kansas Highway Commission revised two speed zones on U.S. Highways 24 and 40 in Leavenworth County. One zone along the west city limits of Tonganoxie reduces to 45 mph for 0.39 miles and 30 mph for 0.07 miles. The other zone through Reno shortens to a 50 mph limit for 0.5 miles.
Douglas County commissioners approved two minor items. They authorized moving a gas line along the planned Le compton Middle Road route on Faith Lackey property, to be done by Alfred Ditching. The board also noted repairs to an access bridge on Gene Haley property were completed after flood damage.
Carline R Curls 19 of Topeka posted 1500 bond to appear in Douglas County Court on charges of fraudulent use of a credit card. A 17 year old Topeka girl is held in the county jail in connection with the same incident. They were arrested by Lawrence police after using a Bank Americard plate stolen from R B Mays. A preliminary hearing for Curls was set for 2 pm July 11. The pair charged items at Calhoun's Department Store, Oklahoma Tire and Supply, and Merle Norman Cosmetics. Police say another incident occurred Monday. A car owned by David Shreves was recovered by the owner about 7:20 pm Tuesday after being reported stolen between 2 am Monday and 12:45 pm Tuesday.
City Commission set July weekend as the pool dedication date with plans to invite state officials and expect thousands to attend. A side note proposed filling the pool with Gatorade and vodka for the dedication, a tongue in cheek remark. The meeting approved sidewalk use for the Sidewalk Bazaar July 24 or 25 and four farmer stalls. Also approved base plans for a new ground level water tank and sewer and paving specifications for several streets. An ordinance annexed land east of Highway 59 South and east of Michigan Street. Razing zoning to expand a lumber yard near 5th and Minnesota was approved on second reading. Several stop sign additions and a parking removal on Arkansas Street received first readings.
Amos Thomas a 20 year old OSU basketball star pleaded guilty to second degree burglary for attempting to burgle a vending machine in a dormitory. James Gordon Jr., 19, faces a separate preliminary hearing. Sentencing for Thomas is set for August 1. Thomas was a leading scorer and rebounder last season and later declared eligible to return for 1969 70 and 1970 71 seasons.
A special meeting for parents of Lawrence teens is set for 7:30 p.m. July 23 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Organized by a Douglas County Mental Health Association committee, the event will feature a drug display and a panel of local experts. Kansas City’s Project Pepperland will share experiences of former addicts.
Angie S Shepard, 3, daughter of Karen K Shepard, sustained minor injuries when the car she rode in collided at 5th and Wisc Sts at 6 45 p m Tuesday. The other driver was Kenneth H Bailey 23 of Ottawa. Police estimated damages 400 to Shepard vehicle and 200 to Bailey s car. The child was not treated.
Polish refugee Wil helm Weiner bought a painting for 1.80 in an English market. Experts concluded over three years that the 200-year-old Goya was probably painted in Rome in 1707. Weiner kept the work in a bank vault declaring he was not taking any chances.
