Pentagon halts Fort Riley expansion plan
The Pentagon dropped plans to buy up to 100000 acres around Fort Riley, citing budget limits and world changes. Local farmers and politicians praised the decision as protecting land and tax bases while ensuring Fort Riley remains a key military installation and economic asset. The 1st Infantry Division based there drew praise from Dole, Kassebaum, and local groups for a “win-win” outcome.

Death of Friend Shocks Satanta Crash Recovery Hopes
In Satanta, a Jeep driven by 19 year old Timothy Massey collided head on with a pickup driven by 19 year old Dallas Nelson on a foggy U.S. 56 two miles southwest of Satanta. Massey was killed at the scene while Nelson survived and remained hospitalized in Garden City. Survivors recalled their five year friendship and Massey’s active church and rodeo life as investigators determined Massey may have misjudged the fog and veered into Nelson’s lane. Authorities said the crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. as both men were en route to work at Massey’s father’s truck shop and Nelson’s farm.
