Ohio floods claim lives as northern region seeks aid

The death toll rose to at least three with five missing as storms battered northern Ohio and Lake Erie. Vermilion, Norwalk, Wooster, and nearby towns faced evacuations, outages, and curfews while the Coast Guard reduced search activity and Gov Rhodes asked for federal aid for 14 counties.

Thieves Hit Baldwin Businesses On U S 56

Four Baldwin firms on the east edge of town were entered early today with losses and damage totaling more than 3300 dollars. A milk deliveryman notified the Baldwin marshal, and the deputy sheriff said the thieves sought money, not merchandise, with varied loot from cash registers and vending machines.

Larry Heeb Named Director Of Deferred Giving At KU Endowment

Larry Heeb Jr. joins the Kansas University Endowment Association as director of deferred giving replacing Frank Davis. A Lawrence native, Heeb is a 1959 Lawrence High School graduate with KU accounting degrees earned in 1964 and 1965. He previously worked for Arthur Young and Company and the Journal-World. Heeb and his wife Karen live in Lawrence with their three children Jay Jon and Joseph.

City Commission to vote on two annexation items Tuesday

The city commission will consider two second and final readings to annex portions of two trailer courts Mobile Home Estates on North Midh St and Ridgview Trailer Court on south Highway 59 across from KLWN Station. Annexation is split into two bites due to 20 acre per step limit. Plans for three sanitary sewers, paving of 27th Place and Redbud, stop signs at six locations, and potential removal of parking on the east side of the 2500 block of Arkansas Street are on the agenda.

Clarke wins 5000 meters at international meet in Sweden

Ron Clarke of Australia won the 5000 meters in 13 minutes 37 seconds at an international meet in Skovde Sweden. Naftali Temu Olympic 10000 champion finished sixth in the event.

Lawrence police report a burglar left a guitar at the Boy Scout Hall on 945 Mass. St above Duck Nall’s Store. Arnold Janousek reported the break in at 4 15 p m Sunday. A 1966 Ford was stolen from 2116 Princeton Blvd but recovered. Firecracker assault and vandalism also noted along with a broken window at Wilson Glass Co resulting in 235 dollars damage.

Violence at St Louis Cathedral as ACTION youths confront congregation

At noon Mass inside the St Louis Roman Catholic Cathedral three ACTION youths confronted the congregation in a silent protest. White worshippers reacted with force and police detained participants amid racial tension. One demonstrator wore a mock bishop outfit and the group staged chants before leaving. The three suspects included two juveniles and William Calvin Mitchell, 21.

Four-H Agent Quits After 40 Years in Missouri

Ralph Utermoehlen resigns as Douglas County Extension 4-H Agent after four and a half years to become Area Community Development Agent with the University of Missouri Extension Service. He will serve four counties in the Columbia Jefferson City area and has a background in feed milling and farm broadcasting. He and his wife Doris reside at 609 Saratoga with son Randy and other children.

Ben Alexander, Star of Dragnet, Dies at 58

Los Angeles AP reports Ben Alexander a longtime TV performer and former child actor died at his home after suffering a coronary occlusion. He played the detective in Dragnet and later the desk sergeant in Felony Squad. He also had business ventures off screen.

An Associated Press survey shows 584 people killed in traffic accidents during a three day Fourth of July holiday weekend, beating the previous three day record of 576 from 1966 but below the all time four day peak of 732 in 1967. The weekend spanned 6 p.m. Thursday to midnight Sunday and followed a forecast of 550 to 650 deaths.

Lions Band Of Kansas First Again

The 114 member Kansas Lions Club band won first prize for the third straight year at the Lions International convention parade in Tokyo. The high school aged group, directed by five conductors led by Wyatt Cooper of Lawrence, competed against 23 bands.

Plans to decide if a historical play The Ballad of Black Jack will be included in the Maple Leaf Festival are postponed. Don Mueller wrote the piece about 1855 56 battles and volunteers are urged to contact committee members for staging support ahead of a July 17 meeting.
