Emma J. Garrett 87 of Lawrence died Monday July 4 2011 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence She was born April 4 1924 in Oakley and lived in Lawrence since 1946 A homemaker she was a member of First United Methodist Church United Methodist Women Eagles Lawrence Hospital Auxiliary India EHU and American Legion Auxiliary She married Marvin B Garrett October 22 1944 in Oakley He preceded her in death July 22 2005 Survivors include two sons Robert B Garrett and Jerry L Garrett a daughter Janet L Cantin five grandchildren two stepgrandchildren 13 great grandchildren seven stepgreat grandchildren and several nieces and nephews Funeral services are 10 am Friday at Warren McElwain Mortuary Burial at Memorial Park Cemetery The family will receive friends 7 pm to 8 30 pm Thursday at the mortuary Memorials suggested Grace Hospice.

Lawrence man’s sex charges dismissed pending further probe
A 58-year-old Lawrence man had two sex crime charges dropped by a Douglas County judge after an initial May assault allegation on a 30-year-old woman near Haskell Avenue. Prosecutors said they may refile after additional investigation. The case remains unresolved and the suspect had been free on bond.
