Anti-War Veterans March In Kansas City
About 1 000 people including 200 Vietnam Veterans Against the War marched from Liberty Memorial to the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. A dispute over flying the American flag upside down led to the arrest of John R. Smith, 27, of New Haven Connecticut, after police confiscated and inverted the flag. Smith posted $200 bond after intervention by veterans and attorney Arthur A. Benson, with a court hearing set for July 12. The group had earlier established a camp named Fire base Cairo on the Liberty Memorial Mall to protest racial tensions in Cairo Illinois.
