Two Injured In Gang Fight At Eudora

About midnight Saturday on Main Street in Eudora a riot investigation by Kansas Highway Patrol and sheriff deputies led to about 50 people involved. Paul Martin Jr. and Rex Burkhardt were injured and treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A 16 year old from Eudora held. Albert Wurtz posted 500 bond for misdemeanor battery and Leonard Hale posted 1500 bond for inciting to riot and disobeying an officer.

Fourth of July Cannon Fireworks at Young Home

Lawrence residents witnessed a family cannon firing on July 4 at the Edwin Young home. The two cannons, built in 1895 and 1903 by P. P. Belt, are now owned by T. A. Belt. They fire using powder and an electrical impulse from a neon transformer.

Eight Die In Southern Indiana Head On Crash

Eight people perish in a Fourth of July weekend two car collision on Interstate 65 in southern Indiana. The crash in bright sun killed five from an Indiana family and three from a Kentucky family, with questions remaining on why a car veered across the median.

Five Hurt by Fireworks Reported in Lawrence

Five persons were treated Saturday and Sunday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for burns from fireworks though none was serious. Police logged about 50 fireworks abuse calls. one suspect, Greg D. Sanders, 18, posted bond for fireworks violation. Names listed include Carl Hun singer nine, Ron Guthrie twenty three, Steven Coleman H, Melinda Brand thirty two, Cynthia Thompson eleven.

Seven Minor Vehicle Accidents Reported in Lawrence Weekend

Lawrence police logged seven minor vehicle accidents over the weekend with no injuries. The city’s large item trash pickup will run in area four this week, north of 15th and east of Mississippi Street, with items left at the curb for Wednesday collection.

Death of Topeka Woman Mary Underwood Still Under Investigation

The death of 23 year old Mary Jane Underwood of Topeka is under investigation after a 22 caliber gunshot wound to the abdomen. Parraffin hand casts were taken to test if she fired the weapon as Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies await lab results. The shooting occurred about 2 am Saturday at Bruce Lynn's home near Lecompton. Lynn transported her to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where she died. Funeral services were held in Topeka. Survivors include her parents Mr and Mrs Ernest Underwood and grandmothers Mrs Margaret Ebbutt and Mrs Emma Underwood.

Bomb Destroys IRS Office in San Jose

A powerful bomb wrecked the interior of a two story building housing an Internal Revenue Service office in San Jose. No injuries were reported. Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Marks said a 25 foot hole opened at 10 48 p m. Windows shattered and debris flew up to 200 feet. Bomb squad investigates.

Five juveniles cited after Michigan rock incident in Lawrence

Five youths ages 12 to 15 were cited into Douglas County Juvenile Court after officers responded to reports of about 15 individuals walking along Michigan throwing rocks at cars and blocking traffic. A rock shattered a station wagon window striking an eight year old girl on the head, causing a minor cut. The group was halted near Third and Michigan around 10:45 p.m. and five youths were detained and cited before being released to parents.

Three Injured In Highway 40 Crash Near Lawrence

A two car crash one half mile west of Lawrence on Highway 40 Sunday night left three people with minor injuries. Robert L. Wilkinson of Perry drove eastbound and hit Leroy Walburn of 1311 W Sixth as the Walburn vehicle backed onto the highway. Passengers Adrian Genesler 35 Jeannine Genesler 16 and Russell Genesler 11 of 1408 W Third were treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Flash Floods Sweep North Central Kansas After Heavy Rain

Severe rains in Kansas brought unofficially six inches in parts of north central Kansas triggering flash flooding. The Republican and Solomon rivers rose near Glen Elder Reservoir, with the Republican River forecast to crest around 19 feet at Clay Center. Flooding limited to farmland per the National Weather Service.
