Traffic deaths surged toward a three day Fourth of July toll as Americans jammed highways homeward. The National Safety Council warned drivers to slow noting deaths at about five per hour and referencing 1955's record of 407 in 78 hours.

A car sideswiped a hayrack carrying about 35 teenagers near Cassoday Kansas at 1 a m injuring seven youths from Wichita all 14 to 16. The car driver Edward Buckle 24 of Hamilton and two passengers were also hurt. Injured youths were taken to a Wichita hospital. Buckle and two others were treated at the scene. No charges yet filed.
President Eisenhower planned more golf before ending his holiday weekend at his farm in Gettysburg. He played 18 holes on Sunday after a late start due to a scotch four some tournament at Gettysburg Country Club, and he completed 36 holes Saturday. The Eisenhowers would return to Washington late today amid plans for Jaycee Fireworks at KU Memorial Stadium tonight at 8:30 p.m.
Max Conrad attempted a second nonstop closed circuit from Minneapolis to Chicago to Des Moines and back. He took off at 7:29 a.m. aiming to complete each 853 mile loop in seven to eight hours.

Charles Thompson, 25, escaped from the county jail Saturday after deputies finished questioning him. Sheriff Dale Chappell chased him with no firearm aid, catching Thompson 10 minutes later inside a house on 1131 NY St. Additional charges are planned.
