British and French fleets clashed for control of Oran Casablanca and other Atlantic ports as Italian warships rushed to assist. Churchill condemned Petain and reported Allied gains as British boarding parties seized French ships in English ports.
Washington observers describe a yellowed Declaration of Independence display as a study in muted eloquence. London July 41 AP reports anti aircraft batteries engaged southeast England as three German raiders crossed the coast and a lone plane over a town. Townspeople sheltered. no gunfire heard. British fighters and Spitfires battled. Air ministry said seven bombers destroyed and six damaged in raids.
Fire swept a barn on Roy Flory’s Lone Star area farm at about 6 30 this morning destroying 6 to 8 tons of last year hay and killing one horse. A tenant works both farms and was preparing a new hay crop. another horse escaped. The fire department was not called due to rapid, total loss. A house on the property burned previously about two years ago and was not rebuilt. The barn stood a mile and a quarter east of Lone Star and near the farm’s hay storage.
The council led by Senators Barbour Capper and George Gordon Battle proposes an American declaration of national unity for Independence Day. It calls Americans to renew the covenant of equality and freedom, pledging lives fortunes and sacred honor to defend democracy against both foreign and domestic foes.
The Lawrence board of education approved ten new teachers including an assistant athletics coach Kenneth Bruce and several subject specialists at the high and elementary levels. Other actions included coal and service contracts for the district and the annual financial report showing a year ending balance of 78,798.22. The board plans a July 17 budget discussion.
