Kitchen gardens blend seasonal harvest with home cooking
Jon Standing, a Douglas County Master Gardener, promotes small home gardens to grow what families eat. He emphasizes selecting crops by taste, planting fennel, lettuce, okra, fava beans, celery and onions, and notes tomatoes like Brandywine for slicing. He warns Kansas weather is volatile and urges mulching and minimal spraying to extend the growing season. Jennifer Oldridge, KU graduate, previously ran a landscaping business.
