Hoover Braces for Final Week as Commerce Head
Secretary Hoover enters his last full week as head of the commerce department in Washington on July 2. He will leave for California around July 10, stopping to resign to President Coolidge at the summer White House in Wisconsin. A special party train will carry the Republican nominee with Californians led by Governor Yount to greet him in San Francisco. Hoover plans a public address at Oakland and later delivers a speech in August at Palo Alto after convention approval. He has drafted the agricultural and prohibition sections of his acceptance, with a strong push for prohibition enforcement. Ohio preconvention fights are steady, but Carmi Thompson of Cleveland says the state will vote Hoover. Ambassador-elect William S. Culbertson and Virginia committeeman Bascom Slemn also visited the department, as Hoover hosts Sennel Blythe at luncheon before closing the office.
