Extra Butter Shipped Out For Shortage
The Agriculture Department announced the release of government surplus butter for unrestricted export to meet a global shortage. Export price is 40 cents a pound at the port, the same as for Britain since May 12. About 12 million pounds have been sold under the program. The CCC holds about 168 million pounds bought at 63 cents and 70 cents per pound. The export price incurs a loss of 18 to 20 cents per pound to taxpayers. The program is temporary and bids run through July 6.
