Maple Leaf Festival box lunch auction planned at fireworks night

Baldwin festival officers discussed the Maple Leaf Festival box luncheon auction for July 4 at Baker University Stadium. The 9:30 p.m. fireworks will follow a 6 p.m. box lunch auction and ground foods. Queen candidates include Bonnie Barnett and Cindy Calderwood among others. A Dixieland group will perform. The festival runs Oct 15-17 with rehearsals for Ballad of Black Jack and bronze coin ideas plus a parade and hobby show.

Haas Arson Defendant Denied New Trial in District Court

Judge Frank Gray denied Carl Haas a new trial after a June 3 conviction for arson. Haas, 49, of 537 Schwarz Rd., was found guilty for a Dec. 28 fire at Krazy Karl's, 1811 W Sixth, the restaurant he ran. Gray deferred sentencing to July 15 and Haas said he has not decided on an appeal.

EPA charges Hercules Pollution at Sunflower Plant site

A 10 count federal charge in Topeka accuses Hercules Powder Co of discharging ammonia into Kill Creek near the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant causing fish kills. EPA Kansas City regional office alleges willful pollution from April 19 to 28 this year and notes Kill Creek feeds the Kansas River. Hercules denials cite no contact from agencies and say Sunflower’s workforce has shrunk from 3500 in 1966 to about 200 by 1972.

Five Indicted In Federal Drug Crimes

A federal grand jury indicted five Tennessee men for conspiring to transport and sell 85 000 amphetamine tablets and 5 000 phenobarbital tablets. Named are Larry E. Vance Eugene P. Vance Glen Massey and Michael Harrel of Memphis and Franklin Jefferson Malone II of Clarksville. They allegedly sold drugs in a Kansas City hotel on June 16.

Air Strikes Hit North Vietnam DMZ Amid Rising Tensions

U S fighter bombers attacked gun positions in the northern half of the DMZ near Dong Ha and reported one 37mm anti aircraft gun destroyed. Seven enemy troops were killed and 10 secondary explosions followed the Wednesday morning raid involving Air Force Navy and Army aircraft.

Legal Challenge Testing 1971 Inventory Tax Law in Kansas

Kansas Attorney General Vern Miller filed suit challenging the 1971 inventory tax law as unconstitutional for unequal assessment rates. A temporary restraining order blocked enforcement in Shawnee County District Court. The act would let merchants deduct 40 percent of inventory value for operating expenses, reducing assessed value from 30 percent of market value.

Data from Topeka Kansas shows 11 fatalities in the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. Friday for July 1 to July 11, 1971, compared with 10 for the comparable 1970 period, 305 total.
