Judge rejects motions in Bird murder case

Geary County District Judge Melvin Gradert rejected defense requests to dismiss the murder charge against former Emporia minister Thomas Bird. The judge delayed a venue change ruling due to extensive pre trial publicity. Bird, 39, already serving a life term for wife’s 1982 murder, is charged with first degree murder in the 1983 killing of Martin K. Anderson on a Geary County farm. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 26.
