Corps to limit sand dredging on Kansas River
The U S Army Corps plans to curb sand and gravel extraction on the Kansas River to about a third of current yields. The two year phased rules cap dredge output, ban upstream dredging near Bowersock Dam, restrict dredge proximity, and protect bridges, water plants, bank stabilization structures, and levees. Kaw Sand Co. owner David Penny says rules hurt consumers while ecologist Robert Smith calls the plan a reasonable compromise balancing river protection and industry.
