An all day event will mark the church dedication anniversary on Sunday February 4 at the new Worden Evangelical Church. Leavenworth Kan Jan 30 Prompt work of convict firemen under guards direction contained a fire at state prison camp number one after discovery this afternoon. Bunk houses were damaged and some buildings burned yet the damage was small. Fire department from Leavenworth was called. The island farm housing most foodstuffs for the prison sustained damage but was controlled. Warden Lacey M Simpson was in Emporia to address the women's club.
Jennie B. Geer of Leavenworth, longtime WCTU state treasurer and war effort worker, died at her home. During World War I she hosted recruiting stations at Newton and at Fort Leavenworth. Survived by husband and son George. funeral planned for Thursday at First Methodist Church.
Mrs Anne Morrow Lindbergh received the Hubbard Gold medal from the National Geographic Society for her radio operator air navigation and co pilot skills. She is the first woman honored with the award. The medal has previously gone to nine men including her husband Charles A. Lindbergh.

President Roosevelt signs the dollar devaluation bill and grants the treasury title to gold in Federal Reserve banks. He plans a proclamation fixing the new dollar value between 50 and 60 percent of its prior gold content. The administration will use a two billion dollar stabilization fund for foreign exchange and other aims.
A Soviet civil aviation stratosphere balloon reached 20,600 meters in an announced ascent from Moscow. Crew reported external temperatures between 33 and 49 degrees below zero and minus 4 inside. The unannounced flight aimed to beat the Stratostat II’s 62,304 foot record, with secrecy surrounding the ascent.

Representatives from the Production Credit Corporation of Wichita met in Ottawa with officials from Franklin Osage Douglas Johnson Miami Coffey Anderson and Linn counties to form a short term loans association. It would offer crop and live stock loans at a low rate and would be the first such association in Kansas.
Spans of a three span suspension bridge on state highway 22 at Durant Oklahoma fell into the Red River last night when cables on the south bank were cut or broken. Two spans tumbled into the stream with the accident listed as occurring January 30. Authorities investigated the cause and assessed damage to the crossing.
Wheat allotment checks sent to Kansas farmers may refill KU student loan funds. About 26,000 of 30,000 loan pool is lent, with 4,000 remaining for deserving students. Some 52 loan applications for the second term have been filed and will be reviewed by a faculty committee to disburse roughly 60 dollar loans for fees and books.
Ticket sales for the Roosevelt birthday ball rose as workers in local theater lobbies sold entries for tonight’s event. The ball runs from 9 p m at the Hotel Eldridge with two orchestras playing in the ballroom and the fall room, tickets available at the door to benefit the Warm Springs infantile paralysis endowment.
Torska Kansas Jan 30 AP reports spring like temperatures to return today and tomorrow after a sharp cold snap. Western Kansas saw a melt in extreme readings while eastern counties remained cold this morning with Topeka at 3 degrees above zero last night, rising to 17 by 1 PM. Readings of 46 to 50 were forecast for the state, with lows tonight not dropping below 20 in the north and 25 in the south.

Amarillo Tex Jan 30 AP a girl hitchhiker led to the capture of W H Bybee a life timer from Abilene who escaped Eastham State Prison farm two weeks earlier when Clyde Barrow freed convicts Bybee was arrested on a highway while pursuing Eva Lyn B Clark 22 of Los Angeles who had driven away with his car when he stopped at a filling station west of Amarillo Miss Clark said she had thumbed a ride with Bybee out of Vinita Okla yesterday and had learned Bybee was a fugitive but had not escaped earlier The car containing a submachine gun an automatic pistol a rifle and other weapons was turned over to Amarillo police Bybee said he bought the pistol in Pittsburg Kan
The Douglas County Leadership Training school opens at 7:30 tonight at the First Baptist church and runs five Tuesdays. Five accredited courses aid superintendents, teachers, and church officers with curricula, teaching methods, and Old Testament studies. Dean Homer K Ebright invites early enrollment before 7:30, with a 25 cent enrollment fee and a 20 minute public conference each night.
Kansas geologists will be employed under a $12 000 PWA grant part of a 2 percent million US Geological Survey fund. Professor K K Landes of Kansas University announces three Kansas groups will study zinc ore in the tri state area, coal stratigraphy and coal bed reserves in southeastern Kansas, and Osage county coal fields, with work lasting sixteen months from February to June 1935.
The automobile tag rush filled the county treasurer's office as residents queued for 1934 plates under the Feb 1 deadline. With penalties of 56 cents per month after the cutoff, about 3,300 tag purchases had been logged by noon, as Indians presented a pageant in town.
