Topeka hosts a Kansas Day GOP program headlined by Ogden Mills. Kansas Republicans gather in Topeka for rallies, meetings, and candidacy chatter as Alf Landon contemplates another run. The day features the Kansas Day banquet with many state leaders, and female party groups hold separate sessions.
In Acapulco and Guerrero towns thousands camped in parks streets and gardens fearing aftershocks after two strong earthquakes. The Red Cross and relief groups prepared rapid aid once a check on damage is confirmed. Reports say many injured and most Acapulco residents spent the night outside as aftershocks were felt hours after Sundays quake.
Kansas forecast calls for fair conditions tonight and Tuesday with unsettled weather in the east. Snow and cloudy skies expected in Coffeyville Arkansas City Pittsburgh Ottawa and Manhattan while Wichita remains clear. Dirt roads mostly good though snow on Douglas County roads with a one inch snowfall by noon today. Temperatures yesterday reached 44 and likely cooler today with readings near freezing.
Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt states no distilled liquor will be served at any time in the White House while wine may be served with no fixed rules. When wine is served simple wines will be used with a preference for American wines. The District of Columbia legalizes serving wine by February 15.
Administration officials outlined plans to activate the 2 billion stabiliza tion fund and brace for a possible currency clash with Great Britain. Treasury and Roosevelt aides weigh using the fund soon, with devaluation of the gold dollar a potential first step and the federal reserve’s raid supply redirected into the stabilization effort.
Two official physicians, Dr. N Chaniotis and Dr. Lascaris, examined Samuel Insull Jr. in Athens and ruled he was capable of travel. The inspection followed a private medical certificate claiming illness prevented his departure. If health checks support it, his stay in Greece may be extended beyond January 31.

Walter Key Henrichsen a former highway patrolman testifies in the Factor kidnapping case that Touhy gave him $1000 on July 14 after Factor’s release for a $70,000 ransom. Henrichsen says the money was to buy a car, not salary, and relates Touhy’s prior promises to compensate for his services.
Governor Alf Landon said he had no announcement to make about a successor to Dr William M Jardine state treasurer who will resign before March first to become president of Wichita Municipal University. Reports said Jardine might stay until after the August primary when the Governor could appoint the party nominee.
Governor Moeur signed Indiana Governor McNutt’s extradition papers to send John Dillinger to face murder charges in Lake County. Wisconsin had sought extradition for the other gang members, while Indiana also asked for the three others on murder charges tied to Lima, Ohio.
The house declared the sixth Louisiana district seat vacant barring Mrs. Bolivard E. Kemp and J. Y. Sanders Jr. from office. The elections committee found no legal election and urged Speaker Rainey to notify Governor Allen. Senator Huey P. Long supported Mrs. Kemp, widow of the late Rep. FE Kemp, though he did not attend the debate.
Whitey Walker and Ray A. Johnson, two life-term escapees from Oklahoma, were captured in Florida with two women claiming to be their wives. Walker was wounded in the arm and hospitalised with possible amputation. Authorities seek extradition for all three fugitive fishponds wounded in the incident, tied to bank robberies in Texas.
A Kansas woman, Mabelle Weber, 40, was shot and critically wounded about 2 p.m. at her sister’s country home two miles east of Caldwell. Luther Massengill, 30, a former Sumner county commissioner, was taken to Wellington for questioning. Massengill and Weber had been living together, authorities said.
A gang robbed the First National Bank of Midlothian early today stealing about 5000 dollars. They bound and gagged a night watchman and forced entry by burning through the vault door.
George J. Bishop, 70, vice president of the Commercial National Bank, Kansas City, Kansas, died at his home early today. The longtime Wyandotte County banker suffered an unexpected heart attack.
In Cambridge England on January 29 Percy Titmous a brewery worker drove into town with Queen Mary riding in his small car after her vehicle broke down between Ely and Cambridge en route from Sandringham to shop for antiques. Titmous stopped offered assistance and the Queen accepted.

Lawrence merchants reported a clear Saturday upturn with crowds on the streets and shoppers in stores. Several dry goods and ready-to-wear shops said sales surpassed last year and rose above postholiday slowdowns, marking the best day since the holidays.
Roy Lindblad 44 of Topeka a Santa Fe shop employee was killed when a car driven by Quirin Arens Topeka struck a horse near Scranton. Five others were injured including Lindblad’s wife and Mrs Arens. Lindblad a Topeka resident a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner survived by his mother and sister Mrs Henry Fimer of Lawrence.

Incidents included a VFW clubhouse fire in Troy New York killing two and injuring another. a Hamitonon New Jersey cottage fire killing a child. large Canarsie Brooklyn waterfront blazes injuring seven. a massive Anderson Indiana bank block fire. and a Fall River Massachusetts Merchants Mill blaze. The York cold wave dropped temperatures across the east. Washington 10 above. Ottawa and other towns plunged below zero with winds near 105 mph. Manitoba blizzard deaths rise to five as 1,400 Brockton workers lose work. Kansas City saw a light snow with 9 above at 10 a.m.

A report says state penitentiary escapees Jim Clark and Frank Delmar were spotted in Lawrence Saturday night. Police and county officers surrounded an East Lawrence residence armed with rifles and a machine gun, but the two men were not found. Sheriff Roy Murray of Leavenworth cited a tipster who refused to identify himself.

Joseph Holmes died yesterday near Stanley Kansas after serving with both Union and Confederate forces. He received honorable discharges from both and had a military career including the Confederate company A first regiment cavalry and later the Colorado third regiment cavalry in Indian campaigns. His widow and four sons survive.

Tickets available tomorrow evening at several drug stores and the Chamber of Commerce. A mixer committee led by Glenn Charlton is on duty to ensure attendees enjoy themselves. Final drive tonight features one minute men to speak at theaters and radio station WREN at 10 15 o'clock. Tickets on sale tomorrow at the Eldridge pharmacy Crown drug Round Corner herd-Stowits Rankin and other stores. The committee includes Mrs F P O Brien Mrs C E Friend H J Hanna and F L W McDonald.
Topeka Jan 29 AP The state board of administration released a report accusing Warden Lacey Simpson of negligence in the January 19 escape of seven convicts from the Lansing prison. The board urged demotion of two captains, recommended dismissal of two wardens, and resignation acceptance of another. Four convicts have been recaptured, Bob Brady was killed resisting capture, two remain at large.
Chanute Kansas June 29 AP The Neosho Valley bank moved deposits hands and notes to Bank of Commerce. The Neosho Valley bank had 130000 deposits 385000 capital and 16000 surplus, and the transfer reduces Bank of Commerce assets by about 1000. The Bank of Commerce now operates with two Chanute banks, the other being First National. Eight years ago Chanute had five hotels.
A. F. Woestemeyer presented tax collection figures showing 118,695.87 received so far this year, about 40 percent of total and roughly 3 percent higher than a year ago. The annual city clerk report covered January 11, 1938 to January 11, 1934, showing a cash balance around 45,090. The commission reappointed Max Wilhelm and Mrs. A. C. Mitchell to the library board for three terms and awarded Vance Wadhams a two year city audit contract not to exceed 800. A taxi ban ordinance, condemnation actions for West Seventeenth Street access to J and U campus, and a suggested viewing date by registered letter round out the session.

Miss Mary J. DiMas of Lawrence is president of the Colored Women's Kansas Day club, which holds its annual meeting at the Kansas Vocational School in Topeka. A native Kansan, she was born in Lawrence, graduated from Lawrence High School and the University of Kansas, and served for years as principal of Lincoln School. She has traveled extensively in the United States and Europe.
Dr. Albert M. Lythgoe, noted Egyptologist present at the 1923 opening of King Tutankhamun's tomb inner chamber, died today in Boston. He was 65. Officials of the Metropolitan Museum of Art conveyed the death. A Ford ad mention follows.
