Marathon clubs receive grant for Douglas County schools
United Way Douglas County receives a $3000 grant from Kansas University coach Bill Selfs Assists Foundation to support marathon clubs at nine Lawrence elementary schools. The funds fund StrideTrack scanning at Deerfield Woodlawn and Cordley to track miles, cut volunteer time, and provide login codes for progress. Alicia Erickson and Lori Johns wrote the grant. Health departments fret cutback in HIV testing
Kansas health agencies face funding cuts as KDHE ends free HIV testing and rapid test kit provisioning for many counties. Local departments must decide whether to charge patients or shutter services, with few options in rural areas. Some counties, like Douglas and Reno, seek partnerships to maintain testing under new costs. The shift aligns with federal changes tied to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion debates.
