January Becomes Warmest Day Yet in Lawrence’s Mild Spell

Lawrence resident Stephen Dowdell recalls never seeing a January day as warm as Monday as Topeka NWS records show 75 degrees. The warm spell breaks the January 1939 and 2003 high of 74, with the date record also shattered from 67 set in 1917. Dowdell’s granddaughters played at Watson Park while he joked about ditching coats. The dry reminder of January lingered as onlookers considered a swim at the nearby outdoor aquatic center.
