The Kansas Senate Finance Committee chair Sen. Fred M. Harris introduced an income tax bill modeled on the federal rate with a $3,500 married exemption plus $400 per dependent. It would tax 1.5 percent on the first 4,000 over exemption, 3 percent on the next 4,000, and 5 percent on all above, yielding about 9.5 million dollars yearly. Returns due March 15 with half paid at filing and half within six months.

Topeka Jan 29 AP propos ing a temporary three cent gas tax and empowering the state highway commission to take over construction and maintenance of the state system were introduced as joint committee bills. Washington January 39 The federal government, in President Coolidge's opinion, is the best conducted big business in the world. In his final address at the semi annual meeting he reviewed the accomplishments of the present system of relating national expenditures during the eight years it has been in operation. He thanked government explorers for helping to make it a success and urged a constructive economy essential to national prosperity. The meeting was attended by Vice President Dawes, the entire cabinet, heads of many government bureaus, and numerous government employees charged with making expenditures and as mass spectators in the hall.

Youth Held Here Admits Theft of St. Louis Car
Karl Stocker alias Karl Allen, a 17 year old from St. Louis, confessed to stealing a Mormon coupe in St. Louis Sunday after being stopped by Lawrence officers. He said he was involved in several holdups in Florida and St. Louis, and will be held in the county jail until DOJ officers arrive. Stocker, described as large with curly hair, admitted to his police interview after arrest.
