Budget bill to raise hospital staff pay headed to Docking

Kansas Senate approves forestry and game budget for Baldwin Lake

The Kansas Senate approved by 39 to 0 a Forestry Fish and Game Commission appropriation including 343 thousand dollars for Baldwin Lake construction. The measure advances to the House where passage is expected. Baldwin Lake site lies about 11 miles southeast of Lawrence.

Two KU Students Hurt in Turnpike Crash Near Lawrence

Two Kansas University students were injured when their car overturned on the Kansas Turnpike about 12 miles northeast of Lawrence. Gil Fitzgerald 18 of Beloit and Dennis E Greulich of East Greenville Pa sustained cuts bruises and possible internal injuries. Fitzgerald drove the out of control car it traveled 92 feet along the median strip then 252 feet in the westbound lane before stopping. The driver could not explain the loss of control. A truck stopped on the turnpike was rear ended by a car driven by John Douglass 49 of Johnson County. Douglass was treated for scalp lacerations at Bethany hospital. The truck driver Wilbur Robertson 33 of Kansas City Kansas was unhurt.

Local Woman Maud Smith Slain in Her Lawrence Home

Maud Smith a 68 year old Lawrence woman was found dead in her Ind street home. Police say she was killed with the first blow from a blunt instrument and subjected to at least 15 additional strikes. Her body was discovered in the basement by nephew James Cooper. Authorities identified a definite suspect and pursue warrants as investigators weigh sex crime robbery or mental disturbance as possible motives.

The annual Lawrence Memorial Hospital report for 1959, issued by administrator Rodger Johnson, shows total patients rose from 1 451 in 1958 to 5 406 in 1959, with patient days up 11.4 percent to 33 882 and an average daily census of 92.7.

Burckhalter Heads to Michigan University

Dr. Joseph H. Burckhalter, KU professor and chairman of pharmaceutical chemistry, will leave Kansas University this summer to join Michigan University in Ann Arbor as head of its pharmaceutical chemistry department starting Sept. 1. He joined KU in 1947 and became chairman in 1950.
