Health board votes to add 2 members in Lawrence
The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department board narrowly voted to ask city and county leaders to expand its size from five to seven members. It would be the first change since 1969. Newest member Shirley Martin-Smith proposed the expansion to bring more knowledge and experience. Current members include Dr. Alan Cowles, Paul Liechti, Dr. Gerald Pees, and Karen Shumate. Shumate and Pees opposed the expansion. Terms begin in March. Cowles seeks reappointment while Shumate will not.
