Kansas bill would let judges ease sentences for veterans with PTSD
Kansas lawmakers consider House Bill 2430 to allow judges to depart from sentencing guidelines for combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Rep. Tom Sloan says the measure aims to connect veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with needed services rather than prison. The proposal, in the House Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee, follows calls from state leaders noting PTSD among veterans may affect criminal justice outcomes.
