Kansas House to introduce a bill to require voter registration in Douglas and Riley counties home to Kansas and Kansas State Universities. Rep. John Vogel and Rep. Eighth Candidate Enters City Race

Clifford D Turner, 47, a 16 year Lawrence resident and appliance repair operator, filed for one of three city commission seats. He advocates tougher law enforcement, reduced spending, opposes the city sales tax, and has no group backing. Filing closes Feb 16 with a $5 fee or 25 voter signatures. he must be 25, a citizen, and a three year resident.

Former President Harry S. Truman, hospitalized at Research Medical Center for colitis, reportedly had his best night since admission last Thursday. Doctors say tests are improving, appetite returning, and he slept well after a breakfast following upper and lower GI tests. Mrs. Truman says he is "fine" and has been sitting up, while hospital spokesman John Drewes notes the tests can be tiring.

Uganda coup sparks ongoing clashes after Obote overthrow

Sporadic gunfire continued in Kampala even as shops stayed open and military vehicles patrolled. Brig. Gen. Idi Amin and Police Inspector-General William Oryema led the coup that toppled President Milton Obote after 12 hours of fighting. Obote, en route home from Singapore, went to Nairobi then planned to fly to Dar es Salaam for support.

KU Judiciary Reverses F Grade to A for Student

Richard Cole, professor and division chair, says a KU Judiciary Hearing Division ruling changed an F to an A after a proctored exam showed answer similarity to a course outline. The student contended no cheating, citing proctor conduct and memorized study materials. Proceedings remain confidential per the accused.

At McAlester Naval Ammunition Depot three men died and three were injured when 20 mm shells exploded in a deactivation facility. Six workers were trapped in rubble. rescuers recovered all bodies and survivors within thirty minutes. Cause under investigation.

Clark Enters School Race in Lawrence District 497

Wallace G. Clark Jr. 38 of 3038 W. Seventh filed for the Lawrence School District 497 board, the fourth candidate. He cites costs, communication, and human relations issues, and seeks wiser spending and new revenue sources while advocating community involvement. He holds a B S from Keene State and a KU master’s in progress, with five years of teaching. He and his wife Karen have two daughters. Other filings include Jack Landreth Shaver and Mrs Alan Hack. Filing ends Feb 16. Incumbents Paddock and Six not running. Spearman and Jackman undecided.

Huie Files Candidacy For Lawrence School Board

Charles A. Huie of 719 Ariz announces candidacy for one of four open seats on the Lawrence School District board in the April general election. Huie, an employee of Hallmark Cards, said he will offer a comment on his candidacy Wednesday after noon.
